Fatal Crash in St. Charles Parish Claims the Life of a Laplace Woman

On Friday, May 22, 2009 at 2:48 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on U.S. 61 (Airline Hwy) north at LA 626 (St. Rose Ave). The crash involved a 1996 Chevrolet Pick-up pulling a box style trailer driven by Junior H. Alexis (B/M, 50 yrs), of Baytown Texas and a 1999 Cadillac Deville driven by Dorothy A. Richard (B/F, 65 yrs), of Laplace, La. The Chevrolet was traveling northbound on U.S 61 preparing to make a left turn from the right side/shoulder of the roadway at which time it turned entering the left lane of U.S 61 northbound. The Chevrolet then struck the Cadillac which was passing the Chevrolet in the left lane of U.S 61 northbound, on the right rear quarter panel with its left front bumper. The impact caused the Cadillac to swerve out of control at which time it struck the left median then abruptly swerved to the right, crossing both lanes of U.S 61 northbound exiting the right side of the roadway entering the drainage canal. The Cadillac then became submerged with the driver inside.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office rescue divers responded to the scene at which time the vehicle was located and extracted from the canal.

As a result of the crash, the driver of the Cadillac, Richard suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Alexis was cited for making an improper left turn. The St. Charles Parish District Attorney’s Office will be consulted in reference to additional charges.

Driver impairment and speed are not considered factors in this crash.
