Serious Injury Crash Involving a Crane

On Friday, February 29th, 2008 at 8:00 PM, Louisiana State Police, Troop B investigated a serious injury crash on LA 3018 (Destrehan Ave) near 8th Street in Harvey, LA. The crash involved a 1992 Chevrolet pick-up driven by Mr. William G. Caldwell (W/M, 59 yrs), of Marrero, LA and a crane owned by Bolenger Shipyard. The Chevrolet was traveling southbound on Destrehan Ave at a speed well above the posted speed limit of 30 MPH. The crane was crossing Destrehan Ave with emergency lights illuminated and flagmen in reflective vest and flags warning/stopping oncoming traffic. The Chevrolet disregarded the flagmen at which time one of the flagmen had to jump from the path of the Chevrolet pick-up to avoid being struck. The pick-up then struck the side of the crane without braking.

Mr. Caldwell was transported to University Hospital in critical condition.

Mr. Caldwell was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Speed is a factor in the crash and driver impairment is suspected (Results pending a toxicology examination.)

Senior Trooper John Neal is continuing his investigation.
