TROOP A NEWS RELEASE

October 23, 2014
Baton Rouge Woman Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Ascension Parish Crash

Prairieville Shortly before 12:30 pm on October 18, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle injury crash that occurred on US Hwy 61 north of LA Hwy 427 in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 80 year old Nancy M. Claitor of Baton Rouge.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Claitor was driving a 2013 Ford Explorer southbound on US Hwy 61 in the right hand lane near the Ascension Parish/East Baton Rouge Parish line. At the same time, 37 year old Henry Johnson of Prairieville was driving a 2005 Dodge Ram with a gooseneck trailer southbound on US Hwy 61 in the left hand lane. As both vehicles continued southbound, Claitor switched from the right lane into the left lane in front of the Dodge in an attempt to make a legal U-turn through a median crossing. Upon entering the left lane, Claitor slowed to a near stop in the lane of travel while waiting to enter the median crossing and was subsequently struck from behind by the Dodge. The collision caused the Explorer to enter into the median and the Dodge came to rest in a ditch off the southbound shoulder.

Claitor sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. She was transported from the scene to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. Shortly before midnight on October 22, 2014, while at OLOL Claitor succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Driver impairment is not suspected on the part of either driver, and both were properly restrained. Claitor’s husband and front seat passenger, 88 year old Robert Claitor (also of Baton Rouge) was transported from the scene to OLOL with minor injuries. Johnson suffered only minor injuries as a result of the crash. No charges have been filed, and this crash remains under investigation.

Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving at all times. Never drive a motor vehicle when impaired or fatigued, and always remain buckled up regardless of seating position. Avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road. Always obey all traffic control devices and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
