Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: July 18th, 2008 Two Vehicle Fatal Crash on the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway On Friday, July 18, 2008 at 12:48 PM, Louisiana State Police, Troop B investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on I-10 eastbound near milepost 216. The crash involved a 2004 Saturn driven by Mrs. Constance Washington (B/F, 43 yrs), of Laplace and a 2006 Ford van driven by Mr. William O’Brien (W/M, 59 yrs), of Baton Rouge. The Saturn was stopped on the right shoulder of I-10 eastbound near milepost 216 with a flat tire. The driver of the Saturn, Washington then walked to the rear of her vehicle and opened the trunk. As Mrs. Washington stood at the rear of her vehicle, the Ford van traveled onto the right shoulder from the right lane of I-10 eastbound striking her and the vehicle. As a result, Mrs. Washington was pinned between her vehicle and the Ford van. St. Charles Fire and Rescue then extricated Mrs. Washington from between the two vehicles at which time she was transported by Air-med to University Hospital in New Orleans were she later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Ford, O’Brien informed the investigating trooper that he fell asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle prior to drifting off the roadway. Driver impairment is unknown at this time. (Results pending a toxicology examination) Mr. O’Brien was arrested and booked at the St. Charles Parish lock-up for Negligent Homicide and Careless Operation of a Motor Vehicle. Trooper N.
