TROOP A NEWS RELEASE September 25, 2014 Speed Possible Factor in Crash that Kills Motorcyclist Maurepas – Shortly before 6:45 pm on September 25, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash involving a motorcycle that occurred on LA Hwy 22 east of LA Hwy 16 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 35 year old Irvin W. Lachney of Maurepas. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Lachney was riding a 2000 Yamaha motorcycle at a high rate of speed eastbound on LA Hwy 22. After exiting a right hand curve, Lachney’s Yamaha crossed the centerline into the westbound lane of travel and entered into a ditch. The Yamaha continued through the ditch before striking a driveway embankment and becoming airborne. Upon striking the embankment Lachney was ejected from the motorcycle. Despite the fact that he was wearing a safety helmet, Lachney suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported from the scene to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales where he succumbed to injuries received. Impairment is not suspected; however, a toxicology sample was taken from him and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Excessive speed is considered to be a factor in this crash. Troopers urge motorcyclists of all ages and experience levels to take extra precautions while riding and ensure that they are properly prepared and trained for a variety of riding conditions. Through participation in certified training programs, riders are educated on safe riding practices such as being visible, dressing for safety, applying effective riding strategies, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of their motorcycle. Motorcyclists are taught how to apply these safety practices to not only avoid being involved in a crash but to greatly reduce the chance of injury should a crash occur.
