Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: June 29th, 2008 Fatal Crash Involving a Tractor on LA 23 in West Jefferson On Friday, June 27th, 2008 at 2:30 PM, Louisiana State Police, Troop B investigated a serious injury crash on LA 23 northbound, in front of Meadowcrest Hospital. The crash involved a 2004 Chevrolet pick-up driven by Mr. Robert Mayers (W/M, 64 yrs), of Houma, La and a Kubota tractor being operated by Mr. Richard Mitchell (B/M, 66 yrs), of Gonzales, La. The Kubota tractor was traveling northbound on LA 23 in the right lane at a slow speed with its emergency flashers on. The Chevrolet pick-up was also traveling northbound on LA 23 in the right lane at which time the driver failed to slow his vehicle upon approaching the tractor. The pick-up then struck the rear of the tractor with its front bumper, pushing it forward and ejecting the driver of the tractor onto the roadway. The driver of the tractor, Mitchell was transported to University Hospital in critical condition. On Saturday, June 28th, 2008 Louisiana State Police, Troop B was notified that Mr. Mitchell had succumbed to his injuries and had passed away. The driver of the pick-up, Mayers was charged on the scene with Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle. Because of Mr. Mitchell’s death a warrant will be obtained for Mr. Mayers for Negligent Homicide. Driver impairment is not considered a factor in this crash. Senior Trooper Thompson is continuing his investigation.
