Traffic Stop Reveals 2.8 Pounds of Cocaine
On Saturday, May 24th, 2008 6:00 PM, a Louisiana State Trooper, from Troop B stopped a vehicle on I-10 at Veterans Blvd for improper lane usage and illegal window tint. Upon coming into contact with the driver, who was later identified as Leonardo Vasquez (H/M, 24 yrs), of New Albany, Mississippi the trooper noticed him acting extremely nervous and confused about his itinerary. The trooper then spoke with a passenger in the vehicle, Jose Carrillo who also was acting extremely nervous and confused. Both Vasquez and Carrillo gave the trooper conflicting statements separately and appeared to be very concerned with the trooper’s presence near the vehicle. The Trooper now suspicious, asked the driver for permission to search the vehicle at which time Vasquez gave permission. During the same time, the Trooper called for the Louisiana State Police K-9 to respond to his location. Upon the K-9’s arrival, it alerted to the vehicle and a subsequent search revealed approximately 2.8 pounds of powder cocaine hidden behind the rear seat cushion.
