Safety and Preparation during this Hurricane Season

Troop B – The 2010 Hurricane Season has begun and Louisiana State Police Troop B wants to remind all citizens of the importance to be prepared and have a plan in place to ensure safety. There are several tips that will help people prepare and get organized. You should not wait until the last minute, you may forget something important.
  • Know the meaning and the difference between a hurricane watch and a hurricane warning.
Hurricane Watch: conditions are possible in the specified area of the watch, usually within 36 hours.
Hurricane Warning: conditions are expected in the specified area of the warning, usually within 24 hours.
  • Make a personal and/or family plan by putting together the following items:
Flashlight
Extra batteries in needed/various sizes
Battery-Powered radio and lantern
Bottled water (at least three gallons per person)
Canned food and non-electric can opener
First Aid Kit and essential medications
Personal Items (clothes, rain gear, compass, tape, garbage bags, toiletries)
Personal Identification and other important documents
Evacuation route maps
  • Remember to protect family, pets, home and valuables.

Get a Game Plan Now! Identify ahead of time where you will go if you are required to evacuate (choose several options). Make sure your vehicle has been inspected and/or serviced and has a full tank of gasoline. This will alleviate possible vehicle problems while you are traveling. Monitor the National Weather Service, local radio and TV stations for evacuation instructions. Please Remember, Contraflow is the evacuation of last resort! If advised to evacuate, do so immediately!

There are several websites that can assist you in planning: www.getagameplan.org and www.lsp.org or you can visit your local parish websites for information. If you are in need of an evacuation map, you can come to Louisiana State Police Troop B (2101 I-10 Service Rd., Kenner, LA 70065) and pick one up.
