TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

Date: May 24, 2010
Troop B to Participate in Click It or Ticket Campaign

Troop B – Louisiana State Police Troop B will join with other law enforcement agencies and participate in high-visibility seat belt enforcement in conjunction with the nationwide Click It or Ticket campaign. The campaign will run from May 24, 2010 to June 6, 2010.

Nationwide, 12,671 passenger vehicle occupants died in motor vehicle crashes in 2008 during the hours of 6 PM and 5:59 AM, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Nighttime drivers and passengers continue to be among those least likely to wear seat belts. Consequently, they are among those most likely to die in motor vehicle crashes. The high-visibility enforcement campaign is credited with increasing the national seat belt usage rate from 58 percent in 1994 to an observed usage rate of 84 percent in 2009. The usage rate in Louisiana is currently 75 percent. Troop B Commander Captain Carl Saizan says, Seat belts save many lives and I urge everyone to utilize them correctly. It only takes a few seconds to make a life saving decision. Please buckle up!”

Louisiana law requires everyone in a vehicle to be properly restrained. Seat belts are the most effective safety feature available in vehicles today; still nearly one in five Americans fail to regularly wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. Louisiana State Police continually urges drivers and passengers to buckle up and drive safely.
