Three Florida Residents Arrested after Fleeing from Troopers

Grosse Tete On September 18, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop “A” arrested three residents from Florida for several offenses including resisting an officer following a short pursuit and subsequent search in Iberville Parish. The arrests came after Troopers attempted to stop a vehicle for traffic violations on I-10 and the suspects fled.

Shortly after midnight on September 18th, a Trooper attempted to stop a 2014 Cadillac ATS traveling westbound on I-10 east of Grosse Tete for several traffic violations. The driver of the vehicle (later identified as 25 year old Daanish Johnson of Jacksonville, FL) pulled his vehicle to a stop on the shoulder. As the Trooper exited his vehicle to conduct the traffic stop, Johnson drove away and continued traveling westbound. He then exited at LA Hwy 77 and proceeded south, and the Trooper pursued but soon lost sight of the vehicle. A short time later, the abandoned Cadillac was discovered on a side street west of LA Hwy 77 and the occupants fled on foot.

Troopers asked for assistance from LSP Air Support, the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Angola K9 search team in locating the subjects. During the search, an employee at the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete informed authorities that two suspicious males had been picked up by a taxi at the truck stop. The taxi cab company informed Troopers that the two males had been dropped off at the Greyhound bus station on Florida Blvd. in Baton Rouge. Troopers along with DPS Officers, Baton Rouge City Police and the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office were able to locate Johnson and one of his passengers (20 year old Devonte Crawford of Jacksonville, FL) at the bus station.

Both were placed under arrest and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish jail as fugitives from Iberville Parish. They were then transported to the Iberville Parish jail where Johnson was booked with Aggravated flight from an officer, Resisting an officer, Reckless operation, Following too closely, and Improper lane usage. Crawford was booked for Resisting an officer.

The search for the second passenger of the vehicle continued through the morning, but was called off shortly before noon. However, a short time after the search was called off a suspicious individual was spotted near the Tiger Truck Stop. Several members of the Angola K9 search team and Iberville SO deputies were still in the area and were quickly able to apprehend the subject. He was identified as 30 year old Thomas Payne, also of Jacksonville, FL. Payne was booked into the Iberville Parish jail for Resisting an officer. This case remains under investigation.
