| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: May 18, 2010 **UPDATE** During today’s enforcement detail, there was a total of 328 traffic citations issued. Of those citations, 140 violated railroad safety laws, 106 seatbelt and child restraint violations, and 83 were other traffic violations. Operation Lifesaver Enforcement Detail in Southeast Louisiana Troop B – On Tuesday, May 18, 2010, Louisiana State Police Troopers from Troop A and Troop B are partnering with numerous law enforcement agencies throughout southeast Louisiana in an effort to educate the citizens about railroad safety. Troopers will ride on the Kansas City Southern Railroad, Canadian National Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad throughout several parishes including St. James Parish, St. John the Baptist Parish, St. Charles Parish and Jefferson Parish. Joint enforcement efforts will target motorists who ignore railroad crossing warning signals as a train approaches and other related traffic laws. The enforcement detail will begin at 7:00 AM and continue until 3:00 PM. The command post will be located on LA 3224 (Hemlock Rd.) at the Kansas City Southern Railroad crossing, near the LaPlace Fire Department. All media personnel are invited to visit the command post. Last year, 11 people in Louisiana lost their lives in vehicle crashes with trains. This was the sixth highest number of such fatalities in the nation. Louisiana state law requires motorists to obey signals at railroad crossings that indicate an approaching train including flashing red lights and lowered gates. Failure to obey these signals may result in a $200.00 fine and 30 days in jail for a first offense with higher fines and increased jail time for additional violations. The fine for racing a train is $1,000.
