Troop B Participates in National Teen Driver Safety Week

Troop B – Area motorists hitting the road on October 17-23, 2010 should wear their seat belts or be ready to face the consequences. That’s the message Louisiana State Police Troop B will be sending, as they buckle down on all motorists not buckling up, especially teens.

According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, teenage drivers and passengers have not embraced the message about the importance of wearing a seat belt and are still one of the least likely groups to buckle up. Louisiana statistics for the years 2003 to 2008 show that 73 percent of teen passenger vehicle occupants, ages 16-20, killed in motor vehicle crashes were not buckled up at the time of the crash. Had all these teens been wearing their seat belts, as many as half of them would have survived.

Troopers will focus their attention on impaired driving and distracted driving as well. “Distractions in the vehicle, such as cell phones, texting and passengers, can lead to deadly crashes,” Captain Carl Saizan, Commander of Troop B said. “Our teens need to know that driving is not a game and their full attention needs to be directed on the road.”

“There is nothing more difficult than breaking the news to a parent that their son or daughter won’t be coming home. This program will help to ensure that our children remain safe and keep coming home, night after night,” said Captain Carl Saizan.

Our message to teens is simple: buckle up, drive sober and avoid all distractions. If you see a possibly impaired driver or hazardous situation, please call Louisiana State Police at *LSP (*577) from your cell phone.
