TROOP A NEWS RELEASE

September 21, 2014
Unrestrained Driver Killed after Running a Stop Sign on US Hwy 190

Lottie Shortly after 1:30 am on September 21, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on US Hwy 190 at LA Hwy 81 in Pointe Coupee Parish. The crash took the life of 43 year old Michael J. Jarreau of Fordoche.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Jarreau was driving a 2006 Honda Civic southbound on LA Hwy 81. At the same time, 50 year old Keith Drumgoole of Fayette, MS was driving westbound in the right lane on US Hwy 190 in a 2004 Peterbilt tractor-trailer. As Jarreau approached the intersection of LA Hwy 81 and US Hwy 190, he failed to stop at the stop sign. As a result his Honda struck the right rear corner of the trailer driven by Drumgoole. After striking the Peterbilt, the Honda rotated and came to rest in the eastbound lanes of US Hwy190.

Jarreau was unrestrained at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries as a result. Drumgoole was properly restrained and was uninjured. Driver impairment is unknown on the part of Jarreau; however, a toxicology sample was taken from him and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Impairment on the part of Drumgoole is not suspected.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up.
