Louisiana State Police Seize Approximately $315,000 of Heroin

Troop B – On October 12, 2010, Louisiana State Police Troopers, assigned to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Task Force (HIDTA), and Amtrak Police arrested two male suspects at the Amtrak Train Station in New Orleans for possession of approximately 10 pounds of heroin.

HIDTA Troopers and Amtrak Police were assigned to the train station for joint patrol operations. Investigators noticed one of the suspects in a wheelchair with a seat cushion which appeared to be larger than normal. Investigators spoke with the suspects and upon closer inspection of the seat cushion, investigators found approximately10 pounds of heroin with an approximate street value of $315,000.

Both suspects were arrested and charged with possession and distribution charges of the heroin. They will face federal prosecution by the United States Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of Louisiana. The suspects are Guillermo Cruz Valdovinos (age 60) of Mazatlan, Mexico and Lewis Fidelis (age 27) of Topawa, Arizona. Both suspects face a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program enhances and coordinates drug control efforts among local, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies. The program provides agencies with coordination, equipment, technology, and additional resources to combat drug trafficking and its harmful consequences in critical regions of the United States.
