Students Participate in Text Messaging Mock Crash

Troop B - On Wednesday, October 6, 2010, students from Destrehan High School and Hahnville High School will participate in a Mock Crash involving text messaging. The Mock Crash will take place at ITT Technical College at 11:30 AM at 140 James Drive East, St. Rose, LA 70087. The Mock Crash will be performed in front of seniors from numerous area high schools from surrounding parishes. ITT Technical Institute is hosting “Senior Day” and, while helping the students with their careers and futures, an emphasis will be placed on education, traffic safety and good decision making skills.

Students involved will act out a fatal crash scenario in front of their peers, allowing the students to see first-hand how text messaging can quickly turn deadly, affecting everyone involved. Parents of the students will also be playing parts in this scenario. The Mock Crash will emphasize the dangers and consequences of texting while driving, the usage of seat belts, and the emotional suffering families endure when a fatal or serious injury crash occurs in reality.

Numerous state and local agencies will be on hand to participate and provide their expertise to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center, Louisiana State Police, St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, St. Charles Parish EMS, St. Rose Volunteer Fire Department and the St. Charles Parish Coroner’s Office will also participate in the scenario. They will also be available to answer all of the student’s questions at the conclusion of the event.

This education by participating agencies is an effort to reduce the number of crashes that are caused by text messaging, distracted driving, and lack of seat belt use. Programs, such as the Mock Crash, teach our youth the importance of making sound decisions throughout the course of their lives.

**All media outlets are invited to attend this event. **
