| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: December 18, 2009 Woman Arrested in Jefferson Parish after Vehicle Pursuit Troop B – On December 17, 2009, at approximately 10:20 PM, a Louisiana State Trooper was stopped at a red light on Bruin Drive at Power Boulevard when he observed a 2007 Chrysler 300 on Power Blvd. driving in an erratic manner. The Chrysler crossed the center and right lanes, turned onto Bruin Drive and stopped abruptly next to the Trooper. The driver of the Chrysler, later identified as Vivian B. Maklary (W/F, age 51) of Folsom, told the Trooper that her daughter was in trouble and he needed to follow her. The Trooper directed Maklary to pull over on the side of the road so he could obtain more information from her. Maklary refused the trooper’s direction and then suddenly began backing up her vehicle onto Power Boulevard, traveling in the wrong direction. The Trooper attempted to stop Maklary using his emergency lights and siren but Maklary continued to flee on parish roads and neighborhood streets. During the pursuit, Maklary approached troopers who were positioned on West Napoleon near Mississippi Street in an effort to get her stopped. Maklary slowed down momentarily as she approached the troopers who were blocking the road, but as troopers shouted loud verbal commands for her to stop and exit her vehicle, she refused and suddenly began accelerating directly towards the troopers at a high rate of speed. Troopers, in fear for their lives, fired several shots, which struck Maklary’s vehicle. As the troopers took cover, the pursuit continued to Massachusetts Street and 26th Street where police were able to apprehend her. During the pursuit, Maklary intentionally struck several police units, including a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy’s unit, which was assisting troopers with the pursuit. Maklary was arrested and transported to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center and charged with reckless operation, resisting arrest, attempted murder of a police officer, two counts of hit and run and aggravated criminal damage to property.
