Fatal Crash on Airline Highway in LaPlace Claims One Life

Troop B – On February 26, 2010, at approximately 1:35 PM, Troop B was notified of a possible fatal crash on US 61 (Airline Hwy.) north at LA 3224 (Hemlock Dr.). Preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Chevrolet Trail Blazer, driven by Norman P. Toups (W/M, age 84) of LaPlace, was traveling on US 61 north in the left lane, approaching LA 3224. According to witnesses, the Chevrolet was traveling at approximately 35 MPH and veered to the right, crossed the right lane and shoulder, and entered a drainage ditch. The Chevrolet continued through the ditch and then struck a tree. Toups was transported to River Parishes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Speed and impairment are not considered factors in this crash. However, Toups’ prior medical condition is considered to have been a factor. Toxicology results are pending the autopsy.
