TROOP A NEWS RELEASE

September 29, 2014
Restrained Mother and Child to be Honored for Surviving Motor Vehicle Crash

Baton Rouge On Tuesday, September 30, 2014, Louisiana State Police and the Interim LSU Hospital will present a Gonzales area mother and child with the “Saved by the Belt” Award. The award will be given to the recipients shortly before 10:00 AM at Galvez Primary School located at 16093 Henderson Bayou Rd. in Prairieville.

The award recipients were recently involved in a crash in the Prairieville area. The mother made the decision to buckle up when she got into the vehicle and to properly restrain her 5 year old son, and that decision proved to be effective when their vehicle struck another when a driver pulled in front of them. When a seat belt is worn properly and child safety seats are used correctly, it not only prevents ejection from a vehicle but also greatly reduces the chances of sustaining significant injuries.

Motor vehicle crashes are the single greatest cause of death and disability for people ages 1 to 34 and are the leading cause of injury related deaths among people of all ages. Last year, over 72,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes in Louisiana. Louisiana law requires all occupants, regardless of seating position, to be properly restrained. Crashes can happen at any time, on any day and the greatest chance of surviving a horrific crash is to Buckle Up.

**All media outlets are invited and encouraged to attend.**
