Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: February 4, 2010 ***UPDATE*** Troop B – On Monday, February 1, 2010, Craig Codina appeared before Judge Cornelius Regan, 24th Judicial District Court, Section “B.” Codina pleaded guilty to 3rd offense DWI, Vehicular Homicide, 1st Degree Negligent Injuring and Careless Operation. Codina will be sentenced on April 6, 2010 in Judge Regan’s court. **UPDATE** Serious Injury Crash in East Jefferson Involving Impaired Drivers On Sunday, August 02, 2009, Louisiana State Police, Troop B was notified that the passenger of the Chevrolet, Sandra Stevens (W/F, 30 yrs) had succumbed to her injuries at University Hospital at approximately 7:00 am. Additional charges will be filled against Codina. Troop B- On Saturday, August 1, 2009 shortly after 5:00 am, State Police investigated a serious injury crash on U.S. 61 (Airline Hwy) involving two impaired drivers that left two people in critical condition and one in serious condition. The crash occurred on U.S. 61 (Airline Hwy) southbound at Manson at 5:12 am. The crash involved a 2006 Toyota pick-up driven by Craig Codina (W/M, 25 yrs) of Destrehan, La. and a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Santos Garcia (Hisp/M, 28 yrs). The Chevrolet was traveling southbound on U.S. 61 stopped for the red light at the intersection of U.S. 61 and Manson when the Toyota traveling at a high rate of speed struck it in the rear. The driver of the Chevrolet, Garcia and the front passenger Sandra Stevens (W/F, 30 yrs) suffered severe injuries and were transported to University Hospital where they were listed in critical condition. The driver of the Toyota, Codina was also injured and was transported to University Hospital in serious condition. The investigation revealed that both drivers were impaired at the time of the crash, resulting in both being charged with Driving While Intoxicated. The driver of the Toyota, Codina was additionally charged with two counts of Vehicular Negligent Injuring and Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
