TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE September 10, 2013 “Consequences of Impact”-Mock Crash at Xavier University of Louisiana On Tuesday, September 10, 2013, students from Xavier University of Louisiana will participate in “Consequences of Impact”, a mock crash involving impaired and distracted driving. “Consequences of Impact” will take place at 6:00 PM in the St. Michael’s parking lot, located at 3938 Pine Street, New Orleans, LA. Students involved will act out a fatal crash scenario in front of their peers, allowing the students to see first-hand how drinking, driving and poor decisions affect everyone involved. Parents of the students will also be playing parts in this scenario. The mock crash will promote the need to have a plan in the event a student is caught in a situation involving alcohol and/or drugs. Their plan would consist of a safe ride home to avoid getting into a vehicle with an impaired driver or driving impaired. According to the American Journal of Public Health, over 3 million students between the ages of 18-24 report driving under the influence of alcohol. Last year in Louisiana, nearly 20,000 young adults were injured in motor vehicle crashes and over 190 individuals were killed. 40% of Louisiana’s fatal crashes were alcohol related. “Consequences of Impact” will also emphasize the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving, the usage of seat belts and the emotional suffering families endure when a fatal crash occurs in reality. Numerous state and local agencies will be providing their expertise to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Interim LSU Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center, Louisiana State Police, New Orleans EMS, New Orleans Coroner’s Office and DND Towing will also participate in the scenario. Personnel from each agency will be available to answer all of the student’s questions at the conclusion of the event. “Consequences of Impact” is a reinforcement activity that is promoted through the Sudden Impact Program offered, through a partnership, by the Louisiana State Police and Interim LSU Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center. The Sudden Impact Program is a comprehensive program targeting students from 7th grade through the college years. The program also addresses parents and what roles they play in their children’s lives. This education is an effort to reduce the number of underage DWI’s, serious injury crashes and fatal crashes. Programs, such as “Consequences of Impact”, teach our youth the importance of making sound decisions throughout the course of their lives. **All media outlets are invited to attend “Consequences of Impact”** Contact Information: TFC Melissa Matey Louisiana State Police – Troop B Public Affairs Unit Office: (504) 471-2780 Melissa.matey@dps.la.gov www.LSP.org www.facebook.com/LouisianaStatePolice | |||
