TROOP B NEWS RELEASE Driver Arrested after Pedestrian Struck and Killed Metairie – Shortly before 9:00 pm on May 27, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a crash involving a pedestrian on US Hwy 61 at Severn Ave. in Jefferson Parish. The crash claimed the life of 67-year-old Ricky Lee of Metairie. The preliminary investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Lee was walking northbound on US Hwy 61 in the right southbound lane. At the same time, 24-year-old Khalil Brice of Natchez, MS was driving a 2019 GMC box truck southbound on US Hwy 61. Lee was struck by the southbound GMC, and sustained fatal injuries as a result. Lee was pronounced deceased on scene by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment on his part may have been a factor, and a toxicology sample was obtained from him for analysis. Brice was properly restrained and was uninjured. Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic could help prevent many pedestrian related crashes. Troopers would also like to take this opportunity to remind motorists that making good choices, such as never driving while impaired and ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, can often be key to preventing and surviving serious crashes.
