TROOP A NEWS RELEASE October 15, 2014 Woman Struck and Killed Attempting to Walk Across I-10 Prairieville – Shortly before 3:00 am on October 15, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred on I-10 eastbound east of LA Hwy 73 in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 21 year old April D. Tasker of Geismar. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Tasker was standing on the right shoulder of I-10 next to her stopped vehicle. At the same time 67 year old Wilhelm Salewski of Dayton, TX was driving a 2009 Volkswagen tractor-trailer eastbound on I-10 in the left hand lane. For unknown reasons Tasker attempted to walk across both lanes of I-10 towards the median. As she did she was struck by the tractor-trailer in the left hand lane. Tasker sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Impairment on her part is unknown, and a toxicology sample was taken from her and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Salewski was properly restrained and was uninjured. Impairment on his part is not suspected, and he was not cited in the crash. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians. Contact Information: | |||
