Pedestrian Struck and Killed in St. John Parish Crash

LaPlace – Shortly before 5:30 am on February 24, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a crash involving a pedestrian on US Hwy 51 south of I-10 in St. John the Baptist Parish. The crash claimed the life of 32-year-old Mona Lisa Hernandez of Houston, TX.

The preliminary investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Hernandez was attempting to cross US Hwy 51. At the same time, 30-year-old Daniel Penton of Hammond was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic southbound on US Hwy 51. As Hernandez was crossing the roadway she was struck by the southbound Chevrolet.

Hernandez sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, and was pronounced deceased on scene by the St. John Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment on her part may have been a factor, and a toxicology sample was obtained from her and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Penton was properly restrained and was uninjured. Impairment on his part was not suspected, and per standard procedure submitted to a chemical test for intoxication, the results of which were negative. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic could help prevent many pedestrian related crashes. Troopers would also like to take this opportunity to remind motorists that making good choices, such as never driving while impaired and ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, can often be key to preventing and surviving serious crashes.
