TROOP B NEWS RELEASE February 23, 2019 Speeding Motorcycle Rider Killed in St. John the Baptist Parish Crash St. John the Baptist Parish – Today, shortly after 12:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on LA 44 at Bradford Place in LaPlace. The crash claimed the life of 37-year-old Anthony Silvestri Jr. of LaPlace. Preliminary investigation revealed that Silvestri was driving a 2012 Suzuki SX1300 at a very high rate of speed west on LA 44. Lisa Caronna (age 41) of LaPlace was driving a 2017 Toyota Camry east on LA 44. Caronna was turning onto Bradford Place, crossing the path of Silvestri. Silvestri lost control of the motorcycle, laid the motorcycle on the ground and was ejected into the Toyota. He was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead. Several witnesses stated that Silvestri was operating the motorcycle in a reckless manner. Excessive speed is a factor in the crash. Silvestri was wearing a DOT approved helmet. Impairment is unknown and a toxicology test will be performed during an autopsy. Caronna submitted to a breath test and no detectable alcohol was found in her system. She was not injured in the crash. The crash remains under investigation. According to NHSTA, for more than two decades, speeding has been involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. In 2016, speeding was a contributing factor in 27% of all fatal crashes nationwide. Speeding is defined as speed too fast for conditions or in excess of the posted speed limit. Speed limits are implemented in the best interest of public safety. Every day, Troopers witness firsthand the devastating effects of motor vehicle crashes caused by speeding.
