Speeding 18 Year-Old Kills Metairie Man in Motor Vehicle Crash

Jefferson Parish – This afternoon, shortly after 12:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on US 61 at Elise Street. The crash claimed the life of 70 year-old Rafael Canessa Sr. of Metairie, LA.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 2011 Ford Mustang, driven by 18 year-old Jordan Marchese of New Orleans, LA, was traveling north on US 61 at a very high rate of speed. Marchese drove the Mustang onto the right shoulder in an attempt to pass a vehicle in the right lane. While traveling on the shoulder, Marchese lost control of the Mustang, struck a curb and entered a business parking lot. The Mustang then impacted the driver’s side door of a 2012 Toyota Tundra that was in the parking lot. Canessa was in the Toyota at the time of the crash. The force of the crash caused both vehicles to travel approximately 80 feet before coming to rest.

Canessa was transported to Ochsner Main Campus where he was pronounced deceased. Marchese was transported to University Medical Center in serious condition.

Excessive speed is a factor in the crash. Impairment is unknown at this time, but toxicology test results are pending. Investigating Troopers believe that Marchese was drag racing at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation and criminal charges are pending.

According to NHSTA, for more than two decades, speeding has been involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. In 2016, speeding was a contributing factor in 27% of all fatal crashes nationwide. Speed limits are implemented in the best interest of public safety. Every day, Troopers witness firsthand the devastating effects of motor vehicle crashes caused by speeding, impaired driving, distractions and lack of seat belts. All of these crashes are completely preventable when you make good decisions behind the wheel. Please be a responsible driver, obey speed limits, drive sober, buckle up and avoid all distractions.
