Two Killed and Child Critically Injured in High Speed Crash in St. Bernard Parish

St. Bernard Parish Yesterday evening, at approximately 5:45 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of a single vehicle fatal crash on LA 46 at Meraux Lane. The crash claimed the lives of 43 year-old David Will Jr. and 27 year-old Stephanie Taylor, both of St. Bernard, LA.

The Troopers’ initial investigation indicated that Will was driving a 2011 Ford Fusion north on LA 46 at a high rate of speed. Will lost control of the vehicle, crossed the southbound lane of LA 46 and struck a tree. Will was pronounced dead on the scene. Taylor was transported to University Medical Center where she later died due to injuries sustained in the crash. There was a 6 year-old passenger in the rear seat of the Ford who was transported to University Medical Center in critical condition.

Speed is a factor in the crash. Impairment is unknown at this time; toxicology results are pending an autopsy. All occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, however the 6 year-old was not utilizing a child safety seat and investigating Troopers suspect the child was not wearing the seat belt properly. The crash remains under investigation.

Excessive speeding continues to be a factor in fatal crashes investigated in the Troop B area. In 2018, at least 7 crashes have been caused by speeding. Each of these crashes were preventable. Obeying speed limits, driving sober, using seat belts properly and avoiding distractions can save lives. Far too often, Troopers’ witness improper use and/or lack of child safety seats as a factor in serious injury and fatal crashes. Troopers and community members from around the state are available each week to assist parents and caregivers with the proper installation and harnessing of children in child safety seats. This is a free service that is offered though the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
