| TROOP B NEWS RELEASE June 12, 2018 Excessive Speed is Main Factor in US 90 Triple Fatality Crash Jefferson Parish – This morning, shortly after 9:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a triple fatality crash on US 90 at mile post 239 (5000 block). The crash involved two vehicles and three people were pronounced deceased on the scene. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2001 Porsche 911 Carrera, driven by 19 year old Scott Garcie of Luling, LA, was traveling at a very high rate of speed on US 90 east. Garcie lost control of the vehicle and traveled into the left westbound lane. The Porsche struck a 2018 GMC Penske box truck head-on and killed the driver of the truck, 40 year old Henry Aucoin of New Orleans, LA. The passenger in the Porsche was also killed in the crash, 54 year old Elroy Lauman of Luling, LA. Lauman was restrained at the time of the crash, however Garcie and Aucoin were not belted. Impairment is unknown and toxicology tests will be performed during the autopsy. The crash remains under investigation. According to NHSTA, for more than two decades, speeding has been involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. In 2016, speeding was a contributing factor in 27% of all fatal crashes nationwide. Speeding is defined as speed too fast for conditions or in excess of the posted speed limit. Speed limits are implemented in the best interest of public safety. Numerous factors are taken into consideration when deciding on a speed limit. Some of those include lane and shoulder width, vertical alignment, superelevation and curve radius. Every day, Troopers witness firsthand the devastating effects of motor vehicle crashes caused by speeding.
