Unrestrained Zachary Woman Dies in New Year’s Eve Crash

Zachary, LA – Shortly after 8:00 pm on December 31, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a three vehicle fatality crash on US 61 north of LA 64 in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 45 year old Joycelyn Tennart of Zachary, LA.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Tennart was traveling eastbound on West Flanacher Rd. in a 2001 Saturn car. At the same time, 71 year old Marion Fuller was traveling southbound on US 61 in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. For unknown reasons, Tennart failed to yield as she approached the intersection. Tennart entered the intersection at US 61 southbound into the path of Fuller’s vehicle and was struck on the driver’s side. The impact forced Tennart and Fuller’s vehicles into the left lane of US 61 southbound causing it to strike a 2012 GMC Acadia being driven by a 16 year old male.

Tennart was not properly restrained and suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. Fuller and the other driver were properly restrained and suffered moderate injuries. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample was taken from all drivers for analysis.

Louisiana State Troopers want to inform motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
