TROOP B NEWS RELEASE May 21, 2018 Unidentified Driver Killed in Crash on LA 39 Plaquemines Parish – Yesterday evening, at approximately 6:50 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of a fatal crash on LA 39 south at Highway 15 by the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office. The crash involved one vehicle and the identity of the driver has not yet been determined. Upon arrival, Troopers learned that the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office was contacted on May 19, 2018 at approximately 11:30 am in relation to a vehicle seen in the canal. Deputies found a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado in the canal, but were unable to locate a driver. On May 20, 2018 Deputies returned to the scene for further investigation and located a body in the canal, approximately 100 feet from the bank. At that time, Deputies notified Louisiana State Police Troop B. Troopers’ initial investigation revealed that the Chevrolet was traveling south on LA 39 at a high rate of speed in a right hand curve. The vehicle continued straight, exited the left side of the roadway and continued approximately 475 feet before going over the tall levee. The vehicle then became airborne before entering the Humble Canal. The identity of the driver has not yet been determined. Alcohol and seat belt usage is currently unknown and toxicology tests will be performed during an autopsy. The investigation is on-going. Nationally, according to NHSTA, speeding is a factor in one-third of all fatal crashes. Speeding is defined as speed too fast for conditions or in excess of the posted speed limit. Speed limits are implemented in the best interest of public safety. Numerous factors are taken into consideration when deciding on a speed limit. Some of those include lane and shoulder width, vertical alignment, superelevation and curve radius. Troopers witness firsthand the devastating effects in motor vehicle crashes caused by speeding. Please be a responsible driver, obey speed limits, drive sober, buckle up and avoid distractions. Contact Information: | |||
