Motorcycle Crash Claims Life in St. Bernard Parish

St. Bernard Parish – This morning, at approximately 3:35 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on LA 46 east in St. Bernard Parish. The crash involved a motorcycle and claimed the life of 43-year-old Michael James Richardson of New Orleans, LA.

Troopers initial investigation revealed that Richardson was operating a 1999 Honda motorcycle on LA 46 east at Volpe Drive. For reasons under investigation, Richardson lost control of the motorcycle, ran off the road to the right and was ejected. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Richardson was pronounced dead on the scene. It is unknown if speed and/or impairment were factors in the crash however, a toxicology test will be performed following an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorcycle helmets are required by Louisiana law for all riders. The helmet will provide protection for the brain and decrease the chances of traumatic brain injury. Troopers encourage all riders to take an approved motorcycle safety course. These courses teach safe riding practices and help you apply safe riding strategies that can help reduce your chance of injury should a crash occur. Making good choices while riding a motorcycle, such as never driving while impaired and obeying all traffic laws, can often mean the difference between life and death.
