| TROOP A NEWS RELEASE January 16, 2016 Unrestrained Bogalusa Man Dies in Head-on Crash in Livingston Parish Maurepas, LA – Shortly after 4:00 pm on January 16, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash on LA 16 north of LA 22 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 24 year old Maurice Cooper of Bogalusa, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Cooper was traveling southbound on LA 16 in a 2001 Nissan Maxima. At the same time, 31 year old Jeremy Hebert of Denham Springs, LA was traveling northbound on LA 16 in a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck. For unknown reasons, Cooper’s vehicle crossed the center line into the northbound lane of LA 16 and struck Hebert’s vehicle head-on. Cooper was unrestrained at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office. Hebert and his passenger were properly restrained and received moderate injuries. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash. A toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers want to inform motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
