LaPlace Woman Killed in Motor Vehicle Crash on US 61

St. John the Baptist Parish – Yesterday evening, shortly before 10:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on US 61 near Vicknair Place. The crash claimed the life of 36-year-old Kristy Zeigler of LaPlace, LA.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Zeigler was walking west across the southbound right lane of US 61. A 2014 Ford F-150, driven by 43- year-old Randy Robertson of Norco, LA, was traveling south on US 61 in the right lane and struck Zeigler with the right front bumper. Zeigler was pronounced dead on the scene.

Impairment is suspected on the part of Zeigler. Toxicology tests will be performed following an autopsy. Robertson submitted to a blood test that will be analyzed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Robertson was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Pedestrians and motorists alike are urged to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians.
