New Orleans Man Arrested for Possession of Nearly $50K in Stolen Vehicles

Orleans Parish – Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations Auto Theft and Insurance Fraud Unit arrested 32-year-old Edwin Smith of New Orleans on five counts of Possession of Stolen Vehicles, totaling nearly $50,000. The arrest stemmed from a lengthy investigation that began in June 2018.

Detectives initially received information about a suspect that was utilizing a truck and trailer to steal vehicles in Orleans Parish. Through investigative methods, Detectives identified a “chop shop” in the 8000 block of Bass Street and a search warrant was issued for the property. During the search, Detectives located a stolen vehicle, one stolen all-terrain vehicle, a vehicle with an altered VIN, and other items related to auto thefts.

In July, Smith was arrested for Possession of Stolen Property after attempting to sell a stolen vehicle. Following the arrest and further investigation, Detectives obtained an additional search warrant for a location in the 16000 block of Chef Menteur Highway, which was identified as another “chop shop.” Additional stolen vehicles were located and Smith was arrested again on November 21, 2018 on the five counts of Possession of Stolen Property and several outstanding warrants. The investigation is on-going and additional criminal charges may be forthcoming.

The public plays an integral role in identifying suspects accused of these crimes, and is strongly urged to report criminal or suspicious activity. The Louisiana State Police online reporting system is available to the public through a convenient and secure reporting form that is submitted to the appropriate investigators. Citizens can access the form by visiting http://la-safe.org/ and clicking on the “Suspicious Activity” link.
