Pedestrian Struck and Killed in St. Bernard Parish Crash

St. Bernard – This evening, shortly after 10:30 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA 46 near Meraux Lane in St. Bernard Parish. The crash claimed the life of 46-year-old Byron Bienemy of Violet, LA.

The initial investigation conducted by Troopers revealed Bienemy was walking in the eastbound lane of travel on LA 46 near the intersection of Meraux Lane. At the same time, a 2015 Nissan Rogue was also traveling eastbound on LA 46. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan Rogue struck Bienemy causing severe injuries. Bienemy was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash. The driver of the Nissan was properly restrained and uninjured. Impairment on Bienemy’s part is a suspected factor in the crash. As part of the ongoing investigation, standard toxicology samples were taken and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for further analysis and toxicology results will be pending an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation and there is no further information available at this time.

Pedestrians and motorists alike are urged to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Crashes involving pedestrians in most cases can be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians.
