Bicyclist Struck and Killed in Hit and Run Plaquemine Parish Crash

Belle Chasse – This morning shortly after 8:00 am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist on LA Hwy 23 near Russel Drive in Plaquemine Parish. The crash took the life of 54-year-old Star S. Stewart of New Orleans.

The initial investigation by Troopers revealed that the crash occurred as Stewart was traveling southbound on LA 23 on a bicycle in the right lane of travel near the intersection of Russel Drive. At the same time, an unknown vehicle was traveling southbound on LA 23 in the right lane. For reasons still under investigation, the unknown vehicle struck the rear of the bicycle, ejecting Stewart. Stewart suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle did not stop or return to the scene of the crash. Impairment on Stewart’s part is unknown but standard toxicology results are pending. This crash is an active and ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time. Troopers ask that anyone with any information about this crash to call Louisiana State Police Troop B at (504) 471-2775

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind bicyclists to never assume that motorists can see you. Simple precautions such as wearing an approved bicycle helmet, reflective materials, and avoiding distractions are key to preventing crashes. Louisiana law requires bicyclists to remain as close to the right side of the roadway as practicable and obey all traffic laws. Motorists should remain alert at all times and remember the three foot rule when passing bicycles. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
