TROOP A NEWS RELEASE April 14, 2017 Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Vehicle in East Baton Rouge Parish Crash Baton Rouge – Shortly after 6:00 am on April 14, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash involving a pedestrian on LA 327 Spur (Gardere Ln.) east of LA 30 in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 48 year old Jose Tista-Roman of Baton Rouge, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Tista-Roman was walking across LA 327 Spur. At the same time, 61 year old James Nugent of DeRidder, LA was traveling eastbound on LA 327 Spur in a 2004 GMC pickup. For reasons still under investigation, Tista-Roman walked into the path of Nugent’s vehicle and was struck in the eastbound lane of LA 327 Spur. Tista-Roman sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. Nugent was properly restrained and was not injured in the crash. Impairment is suspected on the part of Tista-Roman and a toxicology sample will be taken for analysis. Nugent was given a chemical breath test and showed no signs of impairment. Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic could help prevent many pedestrian related crashes. Motorists are urged to call *LSP (*577) to reach the nearest LSP Troop location to report impaired drivers, roadway incidents, or request assistance if needed. Contact Information: | |||
