TROOP A NEWS RELEASE April 19, 2017 Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Iberville Parish Plaquemine – Shortly after 12:45 pm on April 19, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA Hwy 75 north of LA Hwy 404 in Iberville Parish. The crash actually occurred on the evening of April 17, 2017, and took the life of 46 year old Randy L. Romig of Plaquemine. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred at approximately 9:00 pm on April 17th as Romig was walking northbound along the side of LA Hwy 75. At the same time, 56 year old Darrell Spencer of Plaquemine was driving northbound on LA Hwy 75 in a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup truck. For reasons still under investigation, Spencer’s Dodge struck Romig as he was walking along the highway. Following the collision, Spencer contacted the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office and reported to them that he believed that he struck an object near the side of the road. Deputies arrived on scene, and along with Spencer searched the area but could not find any objects that Spencer may have struck. On April 19th, Romig’s family was searching along LA Hwy 75 where they knew Romig had been walking the night of April 17th. Family members located Romig’s body in a ditch alongside LA Hwy 75. The Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office arrived on scene and pronounced Romig deceased. On the night of the crash Romig was wearing dark-colored clothing. Impairment on the part of Spencer is not suspected to have been a factor. The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab assisted in the investigation. Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic could help prevent many pedestrian related crashes.
