TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE March 2, 2015 Driver Ejected and Killed from Motor Vehicle Crash St. Charles Parish – Yesterday evening, shortly before 6:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of a serious injury crash on US 90 west near Willowdale Drive. The driver was identified as Randell Kotz (age 56) of Luling, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that Kotz was driving a 2004 Ford Expedition west on US 90. For unknown reasons, the Ford struck the median on the left then swerved back to the right and ran off the roadway. The vehicle overturned and Kotz was ejected. He was initially transported to St. Charles Hospital then transferred to the Interim LSU Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center where he succumbed to his injuries. Speed and lack of seat belt use are factors of the crash. Impairment is unknown and pending an autopsy. Troopers would like to remind motorists that seat belt usage is required by Louisiana law for all occupants of a vehicle. The primary purpose of a seat belt is to keep the occupant in the seating position preventing ejection. A seat belt also protects the internal organs, brain and spinal cord by spreading the crash forces across the strongest bones in the body and allowing the body to decelerate at a slower rate. Please ensure that all occupants are properly buckled, this will limit injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash.
