Two Pedestrians Hit by Vehicle While Walking in Parking Lot

Jefferson Parish – This afternoon, shortly after 12:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on LA 45 near Bourgeois Lane. Preliminary investigation revealed that 52 year-old Shelia Haggerty of Marrero, LA was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer north on LA 45 near the intersection of Bourgeois Lane. Haggerty, for reasons still under investigation, lost control of the vehicle and ran off the roadway striking a street sign and entering a private parking lot. Tabatha Thibodeaux was walking with her fiancé, David Jablonski (age 24 of Marrero, LA), in the parking lot when both of them were struck by the Chevrolet. Both were transported to the Interim LSU Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center were Tabatha was pronounced dead. David Jablonski suffered moderate injuries.

Impairment is unknown and toxicology tests for Haggerty are pending. The crash remains under investigation and criminal charges are pending.

It is imperative that all drivers pay full attention to the road while driving. All types of distractions should be avoided, including cell phones and other electronic equipment. Crashes occur in fractions of a second and many lives are forever changed. Please remember that motor vehicle crashes are preventable and good decisions behind the wheel help prevent injuries and deaths from occurring.
