TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE March 17, 2015 Laplace Woman Killed in Airline Highway Crash St. John the Baptist Parish – This morning, shortly before 10:00 am, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a fatal crash on US 61 at Main Street. The two vehicle crash claimed the life of 66 year-old Linda Everett of Laplace, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that Everett was driving a 2002 Toyota Corolla south on US 61 and for unknown reasons, disregarded a red traffic signal at Main Street. The Toyota then struck a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was turning north onto US 61 from LA 44. The driver of the Jeep was identified as 57 year-old Maria Lambert of Laplace. Lambert was taken to East Jefferson Hospital with minor injuries. Everett was also transported to the Ochsner Hospital in St. John Parish where she was pronounced dead due to injuries sustained. Both drivers were utilizing seat belts, however it is suspected that Everett was not wearing the seat belt properly. Impairment is not suspected and toxicology results are pending an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation. Seat belts save lives everyday across our nation and it is imperative that the seat belt is worn properly in order to protect the occupant effectively. The seat belt should be worn across the collarbone and the sternum, then across the hip bones. The seat belt crosses the strongest bones in the body and, when worn properly, it spreads the crash forces across a large area of the body. The belt also protects the head and spinal cord and, most importantly keeps the occupant in the seating position. If the seat belt is worn improperly, under the arm or behind the back, it will not offer the maximum protection it was designed for. Louisiana State Police would like to remind the public that Louisiana law requires each person in the vehicle to be properly restrained, regardless of seating position. Buckle Up! Seat Belts Save Lives!
