TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE December 20, 2014 Speed and Lack of Seat Belt Use Factors in St. John Parish Fatal Crash Update: The driver of the Pontiac was identified as Wilbert Carter (age 50) of Laplace, LA. St. John the Baptist Parish – Yesterday evening, shortly after 8:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of a fatal crash on US 51, approximately 1.5 miles north of I-10. The deceased driver has not yet been identified and next of kin is pending at this time. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling south on US 51 and for unknown reasons, the vehicle ran off the road to the right. The Pontiac began spinning and the rear end of the vehicle struck a tree. The Pontiac caught on fire and the unidentified driver was pronounced dead on the scene. Impairment is unknown and toxicology tests will be performed during autopsy. Speed and lack of seat belt use are factors and the crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a motor vehicle crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up.
