TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE December 5, 2015 Laplace Woman Killed in Crash on Airline Highway St. John the Baptist Parish – Yesterday evening, shortly after 5:30 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of a fatal crash involving two vehicles on US 61 at Sugarcane Road. The crash claimed the life of 66 year-old Ora Williams Duhe of Laplace, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that Duhe was driving a 2012 Nissan Altima south on US 61 in the right lane approaching Sugarcane Road. A 2008 Dodge Ram truck, driven by Eugne Yujiro Howard (age 37) of Baton Rouge, LA, was stopped at a stop sign on Sugarcane Road. The Dodge Ram proceeded to turn north onto US 61 and was impacted by the Nissan on the driver’s side. Duhe was pronounced dead on the scene and Troopers determined that she was not wearing her seat belt. Witness statements also indicate that the Nissan did not have headlights or parking lights illuminated. Howard suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Impairment is not suspected and the crash remains under investigation. Wearing a seat belt properly is the single, most effective way of significantly decreasing the possibility of injury or death when involved in a motor vehicle crash. A seat belt prevents ejection from a vehicle and spreads crash forces over the strongest bones of a human body. It also slows the body down in a crash, therefore protecting internal organs, including the brain and spinal cord. Louisiana law requires that EVERYONE in a vehicle is properly buckled, including all rear seat passengers. Louisiana State Police want to reduce fatalities and injuries across our state, help us by ensuring that all occupants in your vehicle are properly buckled regardless of seating position! Buckle Up, Every Trip, Every Time!!
