TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE November 22, 2015 Speeding and Lack of Seat Belt Causes Fatal Crash on Earhart Expressway Jefferson Parish - This morning, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 1:00 am on LA 3139 (Earhart Expressway) at the Shrewsbury overpass. The crash claimed the life of 27 year-old Jamiron Brown of Kenner, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that Jamiron Brown was driving a 2008 Infiniti G37 south on LA 3139 in the right lane at a high rate of speed. His father, James Brown (age 48) of Kenner, LA, was driving a 2015 Dodge Charger in the center lane at a high rate of speed. The Infiniti veered to the right and struck the right guardrail. It continued down the overpass, crossed the shoulder and rolled through a chain linked fence. Jamiron Brown was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected. He was pronounced dead on the scene. As the Infinity hit the guardrail, the Dodge veered left and struck the concrete center divider twice before coming to rest. The crash is still under investigation. Impairment is unknown and toxicology results for Jamiron Brown are pending an autopsy. Speed is a factor in the crash. Nationally, according to NHSTA, speeding is a factor in one-third of all fatal crashes. Speeding is defined as speed too fast for conditions or in excess of the posted speed limit. Speed limits are implemented in the best interest of public safety. Numerous factors are taken into consideration when deciding on a speed limit. Some of those include lane and shoulder width, vertical alignment, superelevation and curve radius. Troopers witness firsthand the devastating effects in motor vehicle crashes caused by speeding. Please be a responsible driver, obey speed limits, drive sober, buckle up and avoid distractions. Today marks the beginning of the Click It or Ticket Campaign, coordinated by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. This week, extra law enforcement personnel will patrol Louisiana roads to enforce Louisiana's mandatory seat belt law. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that proper seat belt use reduces the risk of fatal injury to front seat passengers by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury by 50 percent. This holiday travel period, Troopers will be focusing on seatbelt use and those who choose not to put their children in appropriate child restraints. Louisiana law requires that all occupants be properly restrained regardless of their age or seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, seatbelts can greatly increase the occupant’s chance of surviving a serious crash and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troopers urge all drivers and passengers in motor vehicles to heed the warning and remember that failure to buckle up can turn the happiest of holidays into a nightmare.
