Louisiana State Police Make 40 Arrests for Drug Activity in New Orleans Community
Orleans Parish – Louisiana State Police Troopers have been working in the City of New Orleans for nearly nine months. During the deployment, Troopers have arrested over 1,450 individuals for a range of criminal charges. Our focus has been the safety of citizens and tourists. LSP has committed Troopers from patrol and the Bureau of Investigations to investigate crimes in and around the French Quarter area. The LSP Region 1 Narcotics Unit and the LSP High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) task force have focused their efforts in this area.Beginning in April, Troopers targeted several areas in the French Quarter based on numerous complaints from business establishments and community members. Over the course of seven months, 46 suspects were identified, 40 have been arrested and 6 are still at large for distributing illegal narcotics and/or substances made to look like narcotics. The narcotics seized were cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana, hash and oxycodone. On several occasions, troopers determined that suspects were selling counterfeit narcotics because testing did not indicate any specific drug. Selling substances “advertised” as illegal narcotics is not only illegal but, extremely dangerous. “Last week, 18 arrest warrants were issued for insurance fraud cases and this week we investigated several narcotics distribution cases”, said Colonel Mike Edmonson, Louisiana State Police Superintendent. “State Police stands committed to making a positive impact on the City of New Orleans and reducing the crime rate by arresting those individuals that threaten public safety.” Since March 11, 2015, Troopers have seized 128 illegally possessed guns, recovered 190 stolen vehicles and seized over $1.3 million of illegal narcotics (street value). Over 2,560 criminal charges have been filed, Troopers have answered over 4,850 calls for service and issued over 5,050 citations. If anyone knows the whereabouts of the six wanted individuals, please contact Louisiana State Police at 504.471.2775 or your local police department.
