TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE November 9, 2015 Laplace Woman Killed and Child Injured in St. John the Baptist Parish Crash St. John the Baptist Parish – This morning, shortly before 10:00 am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a serious injury crash on US 51 involving two vehicles. Following the crash, the driver of a 2011 Nissan Altima, Joywanne Adams (age 39) of Laplace, LA, was transported to University Medical Center with critical injuries and later died. Preliminary investigation revealed that Adams was traveling north on US 51 in the left lane approaching Palmetto Drive. A 2004 GMC Envoy, driven by Marlon Pierre Jr. (age 24) of Luling, LA, was traveling south on US 51 and for unknown reasons, the GMC veered across the turn lane into the path of the Nissan. Adams was transported to UMC along with a 1 year old rear seat occupant with moderate injuries. Kyelajuan Bolding (age 22) was also a rear seat occupant and was transported with moderate injuries. Pierre Jr. was transported to East Jefferson Medical Center with moderate injuries. The 1 year old was not properly restrained and the child seat was not properly installed in the vehicle. Adams and Pierre Jr. were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Impairment is not suspected however, blood was taken from Pierre Jr. and a toxicology analysis will be performed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Criminal charges are pending at this time and the crash remains under investigation. Child safety seats including booster seats offer the best protection for children in the event of a crash. When properly installed and used, child seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for children younger than one and by 54 percent for children between 1 and 4 years old. With an estimated misuse rate of 3 out of 4 seats, parents and caregivers are urged to take advantage of checkup events to have child restraints in their vehicle checked free of charge. Troopers promote and utilize the newest child passenger safety recommendations developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Louisiana State Police Troop B serves as a grant-funded Child Passenger Safety fitting station every Wednesday from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm (excluding holidays). Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians are available to inspect and to assist with installation of child safety seats at that time. No appointment is necessary and all services are FREE!
