Unrestrained Driver Killed in a High Speed Crash on I-10

St. Charles - Last night at approximately 10:40 pm, Troopers from Troop B were notified of a two vehicle fatal crash on I-10 westbound at mile marker 214.4 over the Bonnet Carre Spillway in St. Charles Parish. The crash killed the speeding unrestrained driver.

The initial investigation revealed that a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by Darrell Magee (B/M 56) of Franklinton was traveling westbound on I-10 in the right lane at a high rate of speed. A 1989 Honda Accord, operated by Patrick D. Dominic (B/M 48) of Baton Rouge, was also traveling westbound on I-10 in the right lane in front of the Chevrolet. Magee, for reasons under investigation, approached the Honda from behind, swerved to the right, and struck the right rear of the Honda. The Chevrolet continued onto the right shoulder, struck the guardrail, and traveled back across I-10 striking the Honda a second time. Both vehicles then struck the left guardrail, rotated counter-clockwise, and came to rest in the right lane.

Magee was not restrained, was ejected, and was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Charles Parish Coroner's Office. The Chevrolet’s occupant Barbara Taylor (B/F 53) of Hammond, Honda’s occupant Xavier Dominic (B/M 17) of Baker, and P. Dominic were restrained and treated on the scene. Impairment is suspected on Magee's part; however, impairment is not suspected on P. Dominic's part. Blood samples were collected from both for toxicological analyses. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists not to drive impaired; ride with an impaired driver, always buckle up, and avoid all distractions while driving. Research and statistics prove that crashes are very preventable and occur as the result of irresponsible decisions behind the wheel. Choosing to buckle up is the simplest thing you can do to protect yourself from serious injury or death when involved in any crash. Louisiana law requires every driver and occupant to be properly restrained at all times, in any vehicle, day or night!
