TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE January 14, 2014 Seat Belts Save Lives Everyday – A Living Testimony of One Man’s Decision to Buckle Up On Wednesday, January 15, 2014, Louisiana State Police and the Interim LSU Hospital, Level 1 Trauma Center will present the “Saved by the Belt” Award on behalf of the New Orleans Regional Traffic Safety Coalition. The award will be given to the recipient at 12:00 PM at the Regional Transportation Management Center, 100 Veterans Memorial Boulevard, New Orleans, LA, 70124. On December 31, 2013 troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash shortly before 11:00 pm on I-10 eastbound near Causeway Boulevard in Jefferson Parish. The crash involved three vehicles and claimed the life of a Pearl River, LA resident. Richard Macaluso of New Orleans, LA was driving a 2011 Toyota Tundra in the right lane when a small vehicle spun out of control across the lanes of I-10 east in the path of Mr. Macaluso. The Toyota struck the smaller vehicle and unfortunately the other driver was pronounced dead on the scene. Mr. Macaluso was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was not injured as a result of his decision. This crash could have resulted in multiple fatalities had Mr. Macaluso been unrestrained, however his injuries were minimalized through the proper use of the seat belt. Motor vehicle crashes are the single greatest cause of death and disability for people ages 1 to 34 and are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among people of all ages. Last year, over 72,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes in Louisiana. Louisiana law requires all occupants, regardless of seating position, to be properly restrained. Crashes can happen at any time, on any day and the greatest chance of surviving a horrific crash is to Buckle Up. **All media outlets are invited to attend the “Saved by the Belt” Presentation** Contact Information: TFC Melissa Matey Louisiana State Police Public Affairs Section – Troop B Office: (504) 471-2780 Melissa.matey@la.gov www.LSP.org www.facebook.com/LouisianaStatePolice | |||
