TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE

January 21, 2014
Motorcycle Driver Killed in Crash in Jefferson Parish

This morning, shortly before 6:00 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a serious injury crash on US 90 (Jefferson Highway) at Newman Avenue. Emanuel Cook (B/M, age 36) of Bridge City, LA, was transported to Ochsner Hospital where he later died to injuries he sustained in the crash.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Dayton Dufrene (W/M, age 55) of Jefferson, LA, was driving a 2009 Toyota Tacoma east on Newman Avenue. Dufrene stopped the Toyota at the intersection of Newman Avenue and US 90 prior to proceeding across the eastbound lanes of US 90. Cook was traveling on US 90 east in the center lane approaching Newman Avenue in a 2010 Piaggio MP3 motorized scooter. The Toyota began to cross the east lanes of US 90 and was struck by the Piaggio. Cook was wearing a DOT approved helmet at the time of the crash.

Speed and impairment are not suspected as factors of the crash. Dufrene was arrested and charged with Negligent Homicide and Failure to Yield. He was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorists need to remain vigilant at all times while they are behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. When entering a highway, you must look both ways multiple times in order to ensure that it is safe for you to enter the roadway. Troopers remind motorists to avoid distractions while driving. Distractions, such as cell phones, passengers, radios, etc., take a driver’s focus away from the road. When focus is taken away from the road, the serious injury and fatality crash rate rises. Please make good decisions behind the wheel; buckle up each and every ride, drive sober and place your full attention on the road and other motorists.
