TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE October 21, 2013 Unrestrained 1 Year Old Child Dies From Injuries in Motor Vehicle Crash This morning, shortly after 1:00 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a serious injury crash involving a 1 year old child, identified as Jashawn Price from New Orleans, LA, on US 90B east (upper level) at Stumpf Boulevard. Preliminary investigation revealed that Jeremiah Price, (B/M, age 30) of New Orleans, LA, was driving a 2002 Hyundai XG on US 90B east approaching a closed section of the roadway. DOTD personnel were installing message boards and all traffic was being diverted onto the lower level of US 90B at LA 23. Price drove through the area of the road that was closed, disregarding multiple closure signs and barrels that were blocking the roadway. Price struck the rear of a construction vehicle and Jashawn Price, who was seated in the front seat, was thrown forward as a result of the crash. Jashawn Price was transported to Ochsner West Jefferson Hospital, where he later died from head injuries. Speed and impairment are considered factors of the crash. Jeremiah Price submitted to a chemical test and was found to be over the 0.08g% Blood Alcohol Concentration level. He was transported to Ochsner West Jefferson Hospital for minor injuries and was then booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center for Vehicular Homicide, DWI with Child Endangerment, Obedience to and Required Traffic Control Devices, Negligent Injuring, No Child Restraint and No Seat Belt. The crash remains under investigation. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children 2 years old and younger should be properly restrained in a rear facing child restraint. Children 12 years and younger should always ride in the rear seat. Every occupant in a motor vehicle is required by Louisiana law to be properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. 96% of child restraints are installed improperly. Every Louisiana State Police Troop is a grant funded fitting station staffed by nationally certified child safety seat technicians. Each fitting station teaches parents/caregivers how to properly install the child restraint and how to properly buckle the child in the restraint. This service is FREE to the public.
