TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE September 12, 2014 Unrestrained Texas Man Killed in Crash on I-10 St. John the Baptist Parish – Yesterday afternoon, shortly after 4:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a one car fatal crash on I-10 west at mile post 198. The crash claimed the life of 25 year old Jorge Garcia Martinez of Hidalgo, Texas. Preliminary investigation revealed that Martinez was traveling west on I-10 and attempted to pass a vehicle when he lost control of his 2007 Ford. The Ford traveled off the roadway into the tree line and Martinez was ejected from the vehicle. Martinez was pronounced dead on the scene. Martinez was not wearing a seat belt and impairment is unknown pending an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation. Troopers would like to remind motorists that seat belt usage is required by Louisiana law for all occupants of a vehicle. The primary purpose of a seat belt is to keep the occupant in the seating position preventing ejection. A seat belt also protects the internal organs, brain and spinal cord by spreading the crash forces across the strongest bones in the body and allowing the body to decelerate at a slower rate. Please ensure that all occupants are properly buckled, this will limit injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash. Buckle Up Louisiana, It’s the Law!!
